So what is Exactly is Keto Diet?

Brief History of  Keto Diet.

Keto diet have been around since the 1920’s. Although it dates back to its origins at least 500 BC. The modern iterations of Ketogenic diet was introduced in 1920’s, not a diet plan, but as form of treatment against people with epilepsy. With the arrival of antiepileptic drug, the treatment became limited to only a small number of hospitals, which led to its decline.

The theory around Keto Diet surrounds around the idea of limiting or completely eliminating carbohydrates ( Insulin carbohydrate hypothesis )  in your diet could help your body burn more calories  & fat , thus leading to weight loss.

Under this plan,  people are supposed stay away from the consumption of foods , like bread, rice grains. Snacks like chips, nuts and some legumes  are also a big no no. Instead, people should focus on consuming lots of fish, eggs and bacon. Basically you eat like a caveman. The purpose of this, is to put your body on a state of ketosis.

To break it down, carbohydrates , present in bread, beans pasta and even cookies, provide the body with glucose (through digestion in the stomach), then glucose is then used to provide energy for body. By eliminating carbohydrates , you are  basically forcing your body to source energy in two ways; 1. Burning through your fat reserves – Ketosis (fat as the primary source of energy by breaking down fats into ketones ) for energy , 2. Gluconeogenesis – body produces glucose from non – carbohydrates sources.

Is Keto ideal for Weightloss?

Actually, yes & no.  There are some evidences that a low-carb diet and / or Keto diet can be a good way to control appetite. But of course, this is a short term solution. The impression of people loosing weight on low carb diets like Keto, refers to the rapid water weight loss vs. fat loss. Getting on the keto diet isn’t sustainable in the long run, unless dedication is put into it.

Is there any side effects to this diet plan?

Because of its high protein consumption and low to non, carbohydrate intake, the body takes several days to adjust to the lifestyle. People who are on the plan, have been shown to experience;

  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Drop in libido .
  • GI Problems
  • Irritability

In some extreme cases, people suffering form chronic diseases should definitely seek medical advice to avoid the long term negative effects. In terms of the positives, Keto diet can be ideal for people suffering diabetes I and II.Because if its low carbohydrate component, which is  great for maintaining optimal glycemic levels in the body.  But of course, not all individuals are an ideal candidate because other factors may play a role in influencing the effectiveness of the plan.

But just like any other diet plans, the problem lies with the person’s commitment.

Losing weight on a keto diet is possible but of course, this does not happen overnight and results takes a very long time to be noticeable. Being on this diet is commitment and people should be vigilant if they want in, since carbohydrates are almost present in any food. Condiments like ketchup, fruits like apples and bananas, all contain traces of carbohydrates. In a world of takeout, fast-food and frozen food, it’s almost impossible, that not only they contain large amounts of carbohydrates, they are also loaded with saturated fat.

But of course, like any diet programs out there, first and foremost, it’s better to seek medical advice from any board certified physician or license medical practitioner in your area.
