Vitamin C is probably the hottest vitamin right now (because of COVID 19) and the poster child for every flu or cold season ad on tv. Also known as ascorbic acid is a water-soluble vitamin that is finicky, which means it is unstable and prone to oxidation very quickly. When it comes to Vitamin C, humans and other primates don’t have the capacity to synthesize vitamin C, just like some vitamins and minerals. So, consumption of food /diet that contains this vitamin is the only option. Whether you are taking it as a supplement or eating it from a fruit or vegetable, here are some of the benefits of vitamin C in the body:

1. Needed for Collagen Synthesis – Collagen is connective tissue. This means it acts as a bridge for some of the structures in the body. It provides structure, especially in the skin where it provides a structure that makes your skin plump and firm (no to less sagging),. Vitamin C’s role in collagen production acts as an ingredient in order to proceed in the formation of collagen for various part of the body
2. Serves as an antioxidant – Vitamin C is also a great antioxidant especially for lipid peroxidation (degradation of lipids in the body). The formation of free radicals (lipid radicals) causes damage to cells by binding molecules, thus destroying the cellular function in the process. By binding to those unstable atoms, it prevents this cellular damage from happening.
3. Anti-cancer Properties – numerous studies have shown that high doses of vitamin C have been shown to have an increase in survival rate for cancer patients. Mainly due to vitamin c’s ability to mop up free radicals in the body, and since DNA mutation (through oxidation) is one of the major contributors to cancer and aging. This vitamin has also the ability to reduce the risk for cancer because of its cancer-killing property.
4. Reduction of risk for cardiovascular disease – Free radicals (Reactive Oxygen Species) are the result when the powerhouse of the cell (mitochondria) are performing electron transport chain. The accumulation of ROS can have a significant effect on the cells, which can lead to diseases like cancer, insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus just to name a few.
The information above is not meant to diagnose or treat existing or underlying conditions. So if you are planning to incorporate vitamin C into your diet, it’s best to talk directly with your board-certified Physician or health care provider.
